Training practice
How to know what to practise next with your dog
One of the hardest parts of dog training is not knowing what to do. It is knowing what to do next.
After a session, it is tempting to think, “That was a bit messy—we need more practice.” But more of the same is not always the answer. A better question is: “What is the one thing that would make the next session easier and clearer?”
Maybe your dog was doing well until you added too much distance. Maybe they lost focus after several repetitions. Maybe your reward was not ready. Those are useful observations because they give you one small adjustment to try.
Good feedback is specific. It does not just say “great job” or “try harder.” It tells you what was visible, what may be worth changing, and when there is not enough information to make a confident call. That is the standard behind trustworthy training feedback.
For your next session, choose one focus only. Shorter distance. Fewer repetitions. A quieter room. A clearer marker. Tiny changes add up because they give your dog a fair chance to understand the game.
If choosing that next focus is where you get stuck, use the 4muddypawz app to find a suitable short game and carry the observation into your next session.
