Snappy recalls

Recall training is an essential aspect of pet ownership for dog owners. It involves teaching your dog to come to you when called, regardless of what it is doing at the time. Recall training can be crucial in preventing your dog from running off or getting into potentially dangerous situations. Additionally, it can help you build a stronger bond with your dog, and make it easier to manage and control your pet.

The first step in recall training is to choose a word or phrase that you will use consistently to call your dog. This could be something as simple as “come,” “here,” or “heel.” Once you have selected your recall command, you should begin to train your dog to respond to it consistently. My preference is to use the dogs name followed by come … “Milo, Come”

One effective way to start recall training is by using treats as a reward. Begin by calling your dog using your chosen recall command, and then immediately reward your dog with a treat when it comes to you. If your dog is not food orientated you can use a tug toy or ball. This positive reinforcement helps your dog associate the recall command with a positive experience.

As your dog becomes more consistent in responding to your recall command, you can gradually increase the distance between you and your pet. Begin by calling your dog from a short distance away, and then gradually increase the distance as your dog becomes more confident in responding to your recall command. The main concept here is to make yourself THE MOST INTERESTING thing for them.

Another useful tool in recall training is a long line or leash. This allows you to practice recall training in a safe and controlled environment, where your dog can’t run away from you or get into dangerous situations. Use the long line to practice recall training in a variety of settings, such as the park, the beach, or in your own backyard.

It’s important to note that recall training is not something that can be accomplished overnight. It takes patience, consistency, and persistence to teach your dog to come when called reliably. Additionally, recall training should always be done in a positive and supportive manner, without any punishment or negative reinforcement. Train for the situation and not in the situation. This means do plenty of repetitions for no reason other than practise, with plenty of praise and rewards and then release your dog to continue sniffing or playing. Dogs quickly realise not to come if they always get put on a lead straight away.

Finally, it’s crucial to understand that recall training is an ongoing process. Even well-trained dogs can become distracted or forgetful, particularly in new or exciting situations. Regular practice and reinforcement can help ensure that your dog remains responsive to your recall command over the long term.

In conclusion, recall training is an essential aspect of responsible pet ownership, particularly for dog owners. It involves teaching your dog to come to you when called, using positive reinforcement and consistent training. With patience, persistence, and regular practice, recall training can help build a stronger bond between you and your dog, and ensure that your pet remains safe and under your control at all times
